At the age of 18, in 1885, John Francis Brown persuaded his father to invest in a ten acre vineyard in Milawa, on the lower reaches of the King River in north east Victoria, about 110 miles north east of Melbourne and by the end of 1896, he had bought his father out of the partnership and established Brown Brothers which he named in the vain hope that his three brothers would join him in the business. When he died, in 1943, his ten acres had expanded to 35 acres and his thriving winery passed into the hands of his youngest child and only son, John Charles and, today, the Company owns four more vineyards in Victoria and remains in family ownership under the direction of Ross Brown, as CEO, and his elder brother, John Jnr, as Chairman, and a fourth generation family member, Cynthia, ( John Jnr`s daughter and the first female Brown in sixty six years) joined the business in 1994.
The Shiraz grapes (Syrah in Europe) for this Vintage were sourced only in Victoria and a small proportion of the wine was barrel fermented in American oak and, following the malolactic fermentation, the wine spent 12 to 18 months in new to five year old American oak prior to bottling.
A wine to drink now or to enjoy over the next two or three years.
